From Rotten to Rock-Solid: A Garage Roof, Some Mince Pies & Questionable Chicken Labour

A small Isle of Wight garage roof replacement — with help from the Moose team (and a few feathered supervisors)

When John and the Moose Roofing & Building team arrived to look at this Isle of Wight garage roof, it didn’t take long to spot the problem. The fascias were completely rotten, the roof was past its best, and water had been finding its way in far too easily. In short: it was leaking very badly and had definitely reached the end of its working life.

What was going on?

Once stripped back, it became clear the garage roof needed more than just a quick patch-up. The structure required five brand-new joists, all installed using pressure-treated timber for long-term durability. On top of that, we fitted new 18mm OSB boards to create a solid, reliable deck before any felting could begin.

With the weather doing its usual Isle of Wight impression — unpredictable at best — the team cracked on, carefully timing each stage to keep everything dry. Despite dodging showers, the entire job was completed in just three days.

The new roof

The finished garage roof now features a three-layer built-up felt system, providing excellent waterproofing and durability. It’s a big upgrade from what was there before and should keep the garage dry and protected for many years to come.

Enter… the chickens ��

No Isle of Wight job is complete without a bit of character, and this one came with a couple of free-roaming chickens who were very keen to “help”. They spent most of the job underfoot, inspecting tools, scrounging biscuit crumbs and eyeing up the team’s mince pies.

John did briefly wonder whether the chickens might make better labourers than the one he had with him… but sadly, their enthusiasm didn’t quite translate into roofing skills. Excellent morale officers, though.

It might “only” be a garage roof, but we treat every job the same way: solid structure, quality materials, and a tidy, long-lasting finish. The client was kind enough to keep the team fuelled with mince pies (always appreciated), and we left behind a smart, weather-tight roof — minus the chickens.

How our team (with a little festive help!) restored a Victorian roof using its original Welsh slate — and discovered a rather questionable chimney surprise…

Freshwater has no shortage of charming period homes, but every now and then we come across one whose character deserves a little extra love. This project was exactly that: a full re-roof on a beautiful property whose original Welsh slate had sadly reached the end of its life. Or so it seemed…

The roof was well past its best — the classic case of nail sickness , where the old iron nails have deteriorated to the point that gravity becomes the only thing keeping the slates in place. And as much as we like gravity, it’s not quite up to British weather standards.

With Christmas looming, and the scaffold hire clock ticking, we teamed up with Seabrooks Roofing , who handled all the slate work so we could get this project wrapped up before Santa made his rounds. Teamwork makes the dream work — especially when deadlines involve mince pies.

Recycling Welsh Slate — Keeping History on the Roof

One of the highlights of this project was the chance to reuse the original Welsh slate . This slate is famously durable, beautifully textured, and miles better than many modern alternatives. Even after decades of service, much of the material was still strong enough to return to the roof once carefully sorted and graded.

Recycling the slate not only preserved the character of this historic home but also reduced waste and kept the project more economical for the homeowner. A win for heritage, a win for sustainability, and a win for the wallet.

To complement it, we installed new club-crested ridge tiles and decorative finials , giving the whole roofline a crisp, elegant finish while keeping things true to the building’s original style.

And Then There Was the Chimney…

The final photo tells a bit of a story. When we reached the chimney, we were greeted not by proper cowls, pots, or leadwork — but by a stretch of chicken wire casually tacked across the top like a make-do barbecue grill.

Now, we admire DIY spirit as much as the next person, but chicken wire is best kept for chickens — not chimneys. Not only can it’t keep weather out effectively, but it can also trap debris, encourage damp problems, and invite our feathered friends to set up home where they really shouldn’t.

Rest assured, the chimney is now structurally secure, weather-tight, and considerably more respectable!

A shocking mainland botch-job leads to a full roof rescue by Moose Roofing & Building in Cowes.

Last month, the Moose Roofing team were called out to Fellows Road in Cowes to look at a roof that had been “repaired” only weeks earlier. The homeowners weren’t convinced the job had been done properly, and as soon as we arrived, it was clear why.

The property—a three-bedroom terraced home with around 829 square feet of living space—was suffering from major water ingress. Rainwater was finding its way through the roof and straight into the loft space; severe leaks and an unhappy homeowner!

What we found...

The previous contractors, who had travelled over from the mainland, charged around £8,000 to replace what should have been a small section of roof and a few joists.

Unfortunately, the work they left behind was nothing short of shocking. Poorly aligned tiles, improperly supported joists, and gaps you could spot from the pavement—none of it met even the most basic standard.

After we took a closer look, it became clear the whole section needed to come out. Patch-ups weren’t going to cut it.

Our recent project on the Isle of Wight saw us working with a national house-building firm to clad eight dormer windows in Code 5 lead, across a development of four new dwellings.

The Project: Dormer Lead Cladding in Niton & Whitwell

The site, located on land off Allotment Road and Chatfield Road, is part of a new residential development connecting the picturesque villages of Niton and Whitwell. Each of the four new homes featured two dormer windows, all of which required expert lead cladding to ensure they were both weatherproof and aesthetically in keeping with the development’s traditional style.

However, the job didn’t come without its challenges. By the time we arrived, the carpenters had already fitted the soffits—something that ideally happens after the leadwork is completed. But at Moose Roofing, we’re no strangers to adapting on-site, and our team made sure the job was done to the highest standard despite the extra complexity.

What Goes into Cladding a Dormer with Code 5 Lead?

Cladding a dormer in Code 5 lead isn’t just about appearance—it’s a crucial step in ensuring long-term protection from the elements. Lead is one of the best materials for weatherproofing, as it expands and contracts naturally with temperature changes, making it highly durable .

Here’s a breakdown of what the process typically involves:

1. Preparation & Underlay

Before the lead is applied, the dormer’s timber structure needs to be covered with a suitable underlay, such as a geotextile membrane. This prevents condensation and helps the leadwork last for decades without corrosion.

2. Measuring & Cutting the Lead Sheets

Each section of lead needs to be carefully measured and cut to fit the specific dimensions of the dormer. For this project, we used Code 5 lead, which is thicker than standard Code 4 and provides superior strength—ideal for dormers exposed to wind and rain on the Isle of Wight.

3. Fixing & Dressing the Lead
